T&C tests: Afternoon tea at The Petersham

This fancy floral treat is perfect for celebrations

Petersham Nurseries’ new outpost in Covent Garden has been delighting visitors since it opened this summer. And now, in addition to its delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner offerings, The Petersham restaurant has unveiled a brand new afternoon tea.

First things first - to drink, you are offered the choice of a Petersham Bellini, a fresh and fizzy cocktail made with the ripest peaches, or a Tea Tail. The waiting staff are friendly and helpful, and explain that you can also order from the classic tea menu, for example a pot of Earl Grey, Jasmine or Breakfast Tea. Next, it’s the main event – the food arrives at the table with dramatic flair, on a beautiful tiered display topped off with a bouquet of wild flowers.

The lower tier holds a selection of milk buns, filled with Spenwood cheese and apricot chutney, Prosciutto di San Daniele, Haye Farm egg mayonnaise with nasturtium, anchovy and butter, and Mrs Kirkham’s Lancashire and spinach pastry (you are also allowed free refills of your favourites which is a lovely touch). You can perhaps follow this with one of the bijou cakes including blackberry and vanilla mascarpone sponge, original bean chocolate tart, brutti ma buoni, pistachio, chocolate and orange cannoli, and finally an Amalfi lemon polenta cake. Should you have any space left then choose one of the exceptionally sweet bomboloni (mini doughnuts) from the tray that is offered to you, or simply dive into the bowl of plain and fruit scones, which can be topped with clotted cream and Haye Farm strawberry jam.

Petersham Nurseries, Floral Court, London, WC2E 9FB; 020 7305 7676; petershamnurseries.com. Afternoon tea is £45.00 per person, or £55.00 per person with a Petersham Bellini or a Tea Tail.
