What to book: Platform Presents’ Poetry Gala Fundraiser
Stars of the stage and screen, including Juliet Stevenson and Rhys Ifans, will put down their scripts and instead read poems at London’s Playhouse Theatre on 20 January. The gala evening, hosted by Platform Presents, will raise money for the theatre company’s new initiative, the Playwright’s Prize, an open competition launched to support new writing talent.

Overseen by Natalie Abrahami, the former associate director at the Young Vic, the gala will feature the two-time Olivier Award-winner and star of Colette Denise Gough, alongside Poldark’s Kyle Soller, the Golden Globe-nominated Romola Garai, and Jason Watkins and Tobias Menzies, who will this year star in the third series of The Crown.

The initiative is the latest in a series of projects by Platform Presents, the non-profit company launched in May 2017 by the actress Gala Gordon and the producer Isabella Macpherson to establish the careers of rising stars, with a particular focus on female voices. The Playwright’s Prize competition invites writers to submit up to 10,000 words to be judged by a panel including the playwright Mary Laws, the Young Vic’s Nadia Latif, the Times’s commissioning editor Nancy Durrant and the actress Ellie Kendrick.
