Bring Your Dog to Work Day

Ever felt a twinge of sadness when you leave for work in the morning and your faithful hound is perched on his hind legs in the front-room, nose pressed against the glass as he yaps mournfully at you? This Friday 23 June, there’ll be no tugging at your heartstrings needed, because Rover is cordially invited to join you at the office for the fourth annual Bring Your Dog to Work Day.
Launched by the ethical dog-grooming company Hownd, the event is designed to bring UK businesses together in an effort to raise money for two canine charities: All Dogs Matter, which rescues and rehomes abandoned dogs, and Animals Asia, an organisation that saves dogs and cats from the corrupt meat trade in China and Vietnam. Companies can support the charities by making a minimum online donation of £50 in return for becoming an official business sponsor, while individuals can donate £2 or more for their pet to be featured in the online ‘Dog With A Job Hall Of Fame’.

As well as making for some lively watercooler conversations, bringing your pup to the office has important benefits for employees’ mental health. “The presence of pets can substantially reduce a person’s stress level in the workplace. Increased job satisfaction, team cooperation and morale have all been reported in employees who spend the working day with their pets,” said Jo Amit, the co-founder of Hownd.
The pet-lifestyle website PetsPyjamas is among the companies to be leading the charge on supporting the event. “We find that having dogs in the office leads to people taking more breaks, to play with or walk the dog, which makes them more energised when they return to their desks,” commented Gracia Amico, the CEO of the company, which has its own four-legged workforce dedicated to product-testing canine accessories and visiting pet-friendly hotels.
So comb Rover’s fur, dress him in his smartest canine gear and pack him a doggy lunchbox ready for a busy day in the office…
