Win a pair of tickets to a Feast Night in Cornwall
When Simon Stallard and Jemma Glass advertised a night-time mackerel grill outside their café on Cornwall’s Porthcurnick Beach in 2011, they had no idea what they were letting themselves in for. “We served 70 portions of mackerel from just two barbecues,” recalls Stallard, who had been a chef for 20 years before opening the Hidden Hut. “We had to turn people away, so we did it a couple more times until we were catering for 200 guests from seven barbecues.”
Now, their regular feast nights are the UK’s fastest-selling food festival, with tickets being snapped up within seconds of going on sale. For Stallard, the key to feasting on this scale is simplicity: “Our dishes aren’t elaborate – they’re about celebrating the beauty of Cornwall’s natural larder,” he says. “We might roast a chicken over oak and applewood, and serve it with a homemade salsa verde or aïoli, or else we’ll barbecue monkfish or cod freshly caught from the sea.”
