Where to stay: Villa Seburga
With more than 30 flights a day from the UK, it has never been easier to visit the French Riviera – Europe’s apotheosis of elegance and luxury in the sun.
Nestled in the lower foothills of the Alpes-Maritimes lies the idyllic medieval hilltop village of Saint Paul-de-Vence, offering a cultural heritage and landscapes that inspired the great artists, including Picasso, Matisse and Chagall, to settle there. Saint Paul-de-Vence is just 20 minutes from Nice Airport, yet far enough away from the crowds and traffic to enjoy a tranquil countryside setting at a pleasantly higher altitude, while still close enough to visit the attractions of Nice, Cannes and Monte Carlo.
In keeping with the area, Saint Paul-de-Vence is surrounded by luxurious villas with pools, a few of which are available to rent – we chose Villa Seburga to lay our hats. As we approached the property through the remote operated entry gates and impressive driveway, we had a sense that this place was going to be something special.
Relaxing in the warm waters of the large secluded heated infinity pool gazing out over the Mediterranean and countryside, was reason enough alone to choose this villa. However, our fabulous experience did not end there. This well-appointed property was neatly proportioned with 20 rooms over three floors, allowing guests to enjoy their own space and then come together in the large communal living areas filled with beautiful antiques and art. This is an ideal layout for a ‘three generations’ or ‘2-3 families’ holiday, with five en-suite bedrooms, each with extremely comfortable beds and exquisite bathrooms complete with L’Occitane toiletries, large fluffy towels and heated towel rails.
There was a choice of four dining areas, including two on the terraces, with the pool dining area providing automatically controlled awnings to adjust between sun and shade. Two fully equipped kitchens had Miele appliances, Portmeirion tableware, an ice maker and a Nespresso coffee maker (pods supplied). Other features include unlimited Wi-Fi, an ergonomic seating business centre, air conditioning, ceiling fans, extensive satellite TV channels, DVD library, piano, audio systems, and laundry facilities. The swimming pool also has a diving board, water slide and thick foam floating loungers.
Prices at Villa Seburga for one week from EUR 5,000 (shoulder season) to EUR 7,500 (high season). For more information, visit www.stpvilla.com.
