Reflexology: The Health Benefits
After locating Neal’s Yard Remedies on Upper Street, Islington, on a blustery winter’s evening, it was a relief to step into the soothing surrounds of the Calm and Clear complementary therapies clinic, nestled at the back of the store. I was there to experience reflexology – a non-invasive treatment to promote better health and wellbeing, in which different points and zones on the feet correspond with different areas of the body.
Super-friendly therapist Rima immediately put me at ease with a full health consultation, and questions about my lifestyle, including exercise and nutrition. Rima is just one of the superb therapists who is part of the Association of Reflexologists – an organisation that aims to spread the word about reflexology and its benefits. They have access to and can recommend therapists in various treatment rooms across London, and some who can even visit you at your home.
The amazing thing about reflexology is that it’s completely bespoke to each person, and doesn’t claim to ‘cure’ you of any ailments, but instead to help the body restore its balance naturally. It is certainly something to consider if you have concerns surrounding digestion, skincare, and stress, while Rima has particular experience in fertility/preconception issues, and women’s health. Her ability to promote relaxation has seen a large number of people visiting her just to deal with the stresses and strains of everyday life. Stress is the trigger for a whole host of conditions she tells me, and can certainly contribute to a lack of sleep.
The treatment itself was very relaxing, and Rima used an oil-based balm to work on the different pressure points on the feet. While some people may feel some tenderness in certain parts, I found it similar to a firm massage and after the hour was up I was almost asleep! The results were immediate, and my tight shoulders and back felt lighter and much more balanced, and afterwards I had the best night’s sleep in months. I found the whole experience very positive, and would certainly go back for more treatments, especially at a time of stress or if I was struggling to sleep.
Reflexology at Calm and Clear Islington is £60 for one hour. For more information visit aor.org.uk and calmandclear.co.uk
